A Mayor for Bristol

18 July 2008

I've just put this site live, If we get 16,000 names to sign this petition (just over 5% of the voting population of the city of Bristol) then the city will have the opportunity to take part in a referendum on whether Bristol should have a directly elected and publically accountable mayor.

So go sign up!

Great idea - Bristol Evening Post tried it a few years ago so I'm glad it's come up again! There is one thing - greater Bristol is controlled by four unitary authorities not one... an elected mayor would need to be able to have control over them all in order to really sort out greater Bristol as a whole. Just Bristol City Council won't be enough :-)

Well done. This has the potential to be the best bit of political activism to happen in the city in a generation.

Good luck with the petition, an elected Mayor would give Bristol the best chance of gaining the strong leadership the city deserves.

Hi, Just out of interest, what's the difference between what you're proposing and Bristol's current 'Lord Mayor'? http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/content/Council-Democracy/Elected-Representatives/lord-mayor-of-bristol.en

Just created a Facebook Group (A Mayor for Bristol) cross referring to here to get this petition moving as it is something we desperately need instead of the muppets we have in charge at the moment
